The motivation for our research

By the team at the University of Halle: Prof. Dr. Hermann H. Swalve, Dr. Frank Rosner

Why do we work on this project?

Throughout the history of the domestication of livestock, the coat colour of animals has always played an important role. Even though the coat colour of a livestock animal usually has no economic value, it is normally taken as a means of identification or the "brand logo" of a specific breed. At the same time, the inheritance of coat colour scientifically is an highly interesting topic. Only rarely, coat colour and markings can be explained by a single gene with just two variants. Rather, more than two variants of genes exist and some genes may interact with others. This turns coat colour inheritance into a model for livestock breeding in general.

Highly developed methods of scientific statistical analysis as well as modern molecular genetics methodology will have to be applied when analyzing coat colour inheritance. The gain in knowledge will be useful for other problems in animal breeding.

And: White Galloways are simply beautiful!
